Classes & Lectures

We provide classes, lectures, and education for garden clubs, orchid societies, colleges, communities, and others. If you would like more information, please give us a call.

Currently Available Lectures

We Have Several Lectures Currently Available

John R started orchid lectures for orchid societies about 15 years ago. We are pleased to be able to offer the following classes on orchids for our fellow growers to be able to learn from.

Growing Orchids

This is a great lecture for beginners. Learn the most commonly grown genera and how to grow them. How much light, water, how to pot them and other details

Soft Cane Dendrobiums

This lecture goes deep into the section Dendrobium. Learn about the different species, where they come from, how to grow and bloom them depending on where you are located. This is the first lecture that we ever did and societies have loved it. Many growers in the hot south didn't believe that they could grow and bloom these fantastic plants until after sitting in on this class.

The Genus Dendrobium—Other Sections

While we do discuss some of the hard cane and soft cane, most of our time goes into discussing some of the other dendrobium sections. Like the Aporum, Breviflores, Calcarifera, Calyptrochilus, Crumenata,  Dendrocoryne, Densiflora, Formosae, Holochrysa, Latouria, Pedilonum, Phalaenanthe, and Spatulata.

John R. can literally do an entire presentation on any of these sections. If your organization is interested in a specific section, please let us know and we can accommodate your organization.

Catasetinae

At the time John R worked at JEM Orchids, JEM was the largest hybridizer and supplier of the Catasetinae group and learned a lot about these unusual plants. Learn about how to grow these fantastic plants and learn what is real and myth. We cover Catasetum, Cycnoches, Mormodes, Clowesia, Galleandra, other related genera, as well as intergeneric hybrids within this group.

Sobralias

we have a lecture on just the species as well as a lecture on species and hybrids. Sobralias, and Elleanthus, are plants that get a bad reputation, but are very easy to grow and bloom. If you live in a warm climate, they can be grown directly in the grown as shrubs and make incredible plants.

Stanhopea, Gongora, & Coryanthes

The Stanhopea Alliance is a group of orchids with fascinating flowers and habits. We discuss ways of growing the Stanhopeas, Gongoras, and Coryanthes, as well as their hybrids and related genera. There are plants for the windowsill grower as well as the grower who grows outside.

Cattleya Alliance

Cattleyas, the queen of the orchid world. We discuss the genus, the hybrids and go into some of the related genera. Because this group is so big, we can create lectures for each of the genera within the alliance. Please let us know if you are interested in any of these.

Judging Orchids

Some people ask why do we have judges who judge orchids. Why do we do it? what do we get out of it? What is involved? This course answers many of those questions and helps the layman understand why we do what we do.

"Raffle Plants"

Additional Information

We do not allow outside sources to provide raffle plants or donations during our lectures.

As the cost of plants and resources have greatly increased during the past couple of years, so have the cost of plants. We can no longer give away plants for less than market costs, so if your organization requires a certain number of plants, then the organization agrees to pay Other Worlds Orchids for the value of the plants.

If your organization has a budget, then we will be glad to work with you to select the best number of plants that we can, to fit your budget.
